than manufacturing in the US. Although we may have lost the cheap labor wars,
we have not lost the creativity wars.

More reading about creativity led me to the realization that it is not dependent on
education. It can happen to anyone. It is not a talent. That myth is dispelled by
Betty Edwards in “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.” It is not dependent
on natural resources. The intellectual property, branding, of Michael Jordan, is
worth more than the oil wealth of the Kingdom of Jordon.

Ashville, NC, Eureka Springs, AR, and Mountain View, AR, have built vibrant
economies from efforts of Crafts Guilds and Associations. It takes about 50 years
to build such an economy. The Mississippi Crafts Guild, which is in its 39th year,
is building a multi-million dollar facility. Chimneyville brings 7000 people to
Jackson and generates half a million dollars in direct sales, with vastly larger
impact in collateral spending.

Now Starr Homeplace is engaged in fund-raising to try to create a Heritage
Museum and Creativity Center in Northeastern Louisiana. We are trying to build
a regional creative community. The twelve parishes we hope to serve include
some of the poorest in the Nation. In the minds of people here, resides human
creative potential, a vast and valuable resource, largely untapped.

My life is filled with an abiding passion for this idea and all of the good things it
can bring to the area my family has called home. It can be a source of much need-
ed hope for the region. It is a way to find meaning in my life by bringing joy and
beauty into the lives of others.

Whatever we eventually accomplish at the Homeplace will depend on the sup-
port of the people of Northeastern Louisiana. The seeds of those achievements,
however, were planted by the Mississippi Crafts Council at a little craft show I
stumbled into. We will have a display there in 2006.

I will always be grateful for the use of their facilities!

The Chimneyville Crafts Festival is held on the First Weekend of December at the Missis-
sippi Trade Mart. It is downtown just north of the Coliseum. Well worth the drive.
Starr Homeplace Community Days take place on the Second Saturdays of April-October.
In 2007, there will be an additional event in March. All Creative and inventive people are
welcome to join the creative community there.
