Museums: To get an idea of where we are headed with regard to our museum
aspect look at these institutions. One big difference is that we will be using
our community to restore, use and demonstrate our exhibits. Most of these
places have them roped off. Our collections compare surprisingly well to these
even though they are older and state sponsored facilities. If we are well funded
we can eventually surpass most of them through careful but aggressive acqui-
sition policies. If you are traveling visit:
The LSU Rural Life Museum, Baton Rouge, Louisiana
The Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry Museum, Jackson, Mississippi
The Louisiana Cotton Museum, Lake Providence, Louisiana
The Arkansas Plantation Agriculture Museum: Scott, Arkansas
Event: By all means, if at all possible, attend the Chimneyville Crafts Festival
at the Mississippi Trade Mart in Jackson on the first weekend of December.
Fine handwork and skilled craftsmanship are a very important part of human
creativity. Most residents of Northeastern Louisiana are totally unfamiliar
with the kind of fine crafts that the Mississippi Crafts Guild displays here.
Internet: Online searches for Creative Economy, Richard Florida, Creative
Class, the Irish Miracle, Heritage Museum etc. will provide thousands of arti-
cles. The creative economy, and refrains of the Irish Miracle, are being pro-
posed all over the world. Many of these also present the more complex gov-
ernmental strategies for building a creative economy. They include
investments in Education and cultural infrastructure as well as carefully craft-
ed tax incentives.
Visit Starr Homeplace: All of this is abstract until you visit us. Don‘t expect
grandeur, expect possibility. We are two miles North of Oak Ridge, Louisiana
on La. Highway 133 / US Route 425. Community Days are held on the Second
Saturdays of April through October. There will also be an event in March of
2007. At other times, please e-mail jcr@pandemonia.net to set up a time for a
visit, or as a last resort, call (318) 244-5700. We try to be accommodating. If
you have the means to make generous contributions, we certainly need them.
If you have expertise, in building an appropriate organization, marketing, peo-
ple skills, fund raising, etc., and are willing to pitch in, we need your help!
